Alfred Sebahene Corruption Mocking at Justice. A Theological and Ethical Perspective on Public Life in Tanzania Its Implications for the Anglican Church of

The church has a duty to fight corruption and injustice. The increased awareness globally of corruption and the threat it poses to humanity has led many in the secular and Christian world to seek solutions to stamp out this scourge. Recognizing the crisis caused by corruption in Tanzania, his own country, Dr Alfred Sebahene seeks to understand this social epidemic through the application of theological ethics. As a result of the study the author identifies theological-ethical guidelines that inform and add substance to the church’s duty in the public sphere, particularly in the fight against corruption and injustice.

Emerging Perspectives on Organizational Justice and Ethics

A volume in Research in Social Issues in ManagementSeries Editors: Stephen W. Gilliland, The University of Arizona,Dirk D. Steiner, Université de Nice-Sophia Antipolisand Daniel P. Skarlicki, The University of British ColumbiaThis volume in Research in Social Issues in Management expands our understanding oforganizational justice and applies justice theories to develop models of ethical behavior inorganizations. At a time of global economic recession and frequent business and accountingscandals, many people are questioning the ethics of business leaders. Whether these challengesare actual or perceived, models grounded in organizational justice theories provide powerfulinsights and suggest new ways of looking at leadership ethics. By examining what it means to be just and examining relationshipsbetween justice and ethicality, the chapters in this volume have provided conceptual models for understanding ethical challenges facingorganizations. The chapters are organized around two related themes. The first theme is expanding models of organizational justice. After 30 years ofresearch, a natural question is whether we have reached the useful limits in developing theories of organizational justice. The clearanswer you will see after reading these chapters is no, as each chapter pushes our thinking in new directions. The second theme isapplying organizational justice theories to develop models of ethical and unethical behavior in organizations. The models addresstopics of greed, deh...

Today I Gave Myself Permission to Dream. Race and Incarceration in America

Begin a dialogue on racial justice, reconciliation, and transformation. In April of 2017, the Joan and Ralph Lane Center for Catholic Studies and Social Thought at the University of San Francisco sponsored a roundtable discussion on race and incarceration. The event brought together the wisdom of formerly incarcerated activists and leaders with artists, ministers and scholars of various disciplines—law, sociology, theology, critical race theory, and pastoral ministry. Participants investigated the historical, legal, and political structures behind the mass incarceration of people of color in the United States. It also explored the impact of the criminal justice system on individuals and families while identifying the ethical and theological dimensions of this reality. The intent of the roundtable was to use the Jesuit tradition of consciousness-raising to bridge the resources of the university with those of the community. The roundtable created a space for all participants to begin a dialogue on racial justice, reconciliation, and transformation. The discussion not only exposed the historical, social, legal, and ethical dimensions of racial injustice in our prisons; it highlighted the resilience and strategies of resistance among incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals. In particular, the conversation and resulting essays lifted up the role of spirituality and creative expression as essential to the survival and transformation of incarcerated and formerly incarcerat...

Justice: A Beginners Guide

In this highly topical introduction, Professor Raymond Wacks explains and evaluates the leading theories of justice that have shaped our societies and their legislative and judicial systems, and explores the extent to which fundamental notions like fairness, equality and freedom are reflected in contemporary society. By analysing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including terrorism, corruption and migration, Justice: A Beginner’s Guide shows how these ideas are applied in practice – and how far we still have to go to achieve social justice.

Okey Jude Uche C.S.SP. Church and Justice in Igbo Society (An Introduction to Concept of Justice). The Relevance Values Christianity

This book is an attempt to explore the Igbo values of social justice in terms of social relationships. The philosophical concept of justice is broadened by the Igbo worldview, the core that shows how social relationships are the web of justice, which makes social connectivity indispensable and possible. The principles of these social relationships appear as obvious values of justice among the Igbo people and are examined in the light of Christian ethical values and their relevance explored in forging Christianity in the Igbo land. This book also acknowledges the difficulties involved in inquiring into the Igbo ethical values because of the integration of religious beliefs and ethical conduct and customs. Given the Igbo example of the Igbo-integrated life, justice simply becomes that inner compulsion that motivates the human in his/her relationships with others and with God. Consequently, the traditional Igbo people were able to build a harmonious, peaceful, and social order that ensured social justice in the Igbo communal and social interconnectivity. The author argues that the Igbo example can facilitate the growth of Christianity in the Igbo land.

Vicente Chong A Theological Aesthetics of Liberation

Since its emergence in the sixties of the last century, liberation theology in Latin America has paid little attention to the areas of aesthetics and art. At the same time, theological aesthetics seldom has been directly and explicitly concerned about the reality of the poor and the struggle for justice. This mutual disinterest between liberation theology and theological aesthetics is regrettable, because discerning a correlation between them would benefit both theological disciplines in their attempt to understand the saving action of God in the world. It is the intention of this book to fill that gap. A Theological Aesthetics of Liberation correlates liberation theology and theological aesthetics, exploring different themes such as the liberating power of art, and how the Spirit of God is involved in the process of liberation in and through art. This study is a critical reflection upon the question of the beauty of Jesus Christ, especially in relationship with the event of the cross, and upon its meaning for Christian life. This book analyzes such topics in conversation with important theologians: Gustavo Gutierrez, Jon Sobrino, Karl Rahner, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Edward Schillebeeckx, and other contemporary Christian theologians who have explored these themes.""This sure-footed study is an important new theological contribution. It offers not only a broadening of the field of theological aesthetics--one which takes the field beyond its familiar Balthasarian base--...

Stephen Arbogast V. Resisting Corporate Corruption. Cases in Practical Ethics From Enron Through The Financial Crisis

Resisting Corporate Corruption teaches business ethics in a manner very different from the philosophical and legal frameworks that dominate graduate schools. The book offers twenty-eight case studies and nine essays that cover a full range of business practice, controls and ethics issues. The essays discuss the nature of sound financial controls, root causes of the Financial Crisis, and the evolving nature of whistleblower protections. The cases are framed to instruct students in early identification of ethics problems and how to work such issues within corporate organizations. They also provide would-be whistleblowers with instruction on the challenges they’d face, plus information on the legal protections, and outside supports available should they embark on that course. Some of the cases illustrate how ‘The Young are the Most Vulnerable,’ i.e. short service employees are most at risk of being sacrificed by an unethical firm. Other cases show the ethical dilemmas facing well-known CEOs and the alternatives they can employ to better combine ethical conduct and sound business strategy. Through these case studies, students should emerge with a practical toolkit that better enables them to follow their moral compass. Finally, the cases provide an in depth look at how a corporation becomes progressively corrupted (Enron), how the Financial Crisis was rooted in ethical decay at institutions as diverse as Countrywide, Goldman Sacks, Citigroup, Fannie Mae and Moody’s, and at the ethical challenges that persist in the post-Crisis, post-Dodd-Frank environment.

Ivan M. Satyavrata Pentecostals and the Poor

There are occasions, when a book comes along at a critical time, where the insights provided and foundations established through its publishing, fills a broad vacuum with new vision. Dr. Ivan Satyavrata has written just such a book at a critical moment where serious theological reflection about the Church's engagement with the poor again requires recalibration. If readers will take seriously the sturdy scholarship and prophetic voice of Dr. Satyavrata, we will avoid the debilitating results of popular pop justice causes of the day that threaten to dissipate the Church's witness with feel good activities that rob the fullest impact of Spirit-empowered ministry."" -Dr. Byron Klaus, Former President, Assemblies of God Theological Seminary.

Robert W. Pazmino So What Makes Our Teaching Christian.

This work explores a perennial question that Christians who are called to teach must consider: So what makes our teaching Christian? It considers the essential and distinctive elements of Christian teaching by examining the apostles' teaching ministry in the Book of Acts and aspects of Jesus's own teaching in the Gospel of John. It proposes how teaching in the name, spirit, and power of Jesus relates to the teaching ministries of Christians today. For example, an in-depth look at Jesus's teaching of both Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman known in Christian tradition as Photini provides insights for transformative teaching of both insiders and outsiders in a Christian community. This work is a theological, pastoral, and educational exploration of Christian teaching that has implications for both laity and clergy in their ministries.Robert W. Pazmino is Valeria Stone Professor of Christian Education at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, where he has taught since 1986. He has also taught at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and other theological schools across the United States. He is the author of eight works including God Our Teacher: Theological Basics in Christian Education (2001), a third edition of Foundational Issues in Christian Education (2008), and Doing Theological Research: An Introductory Guide for Surviving and Thriving in Theological Education (2008).

Hymns and Hymnody. Historical Theological Introductions, Volume 1

Hymns and the music the church sings are tangible means of expressing worship. And while worship is one of, if not the, central functions of the church along with mission, service, education, justice, and compassion, and occupies a prime focus of our churches, a renewed sense of awareness to our theological presuppositions and cultural cues must be maintained to ensure a proper focus in worship. Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions is a 60-chapter, three-volume introductory textbook describing the most influential hymnists, liturgists, and musical movements of the church. This academically grounded resource evaluates both the historical and theological perspectives of the major hymnists and composers that have impacted the church over the course of twenty centuries. Volume 1 explores the early church and concludes with the Renaissance era hymnists. Volume 2 begins with the Reformation and extends to the eighteenth-century hymnists and liturgists. Volume 3 engages nineteenth century hymnists to the contemporary movements of the twenty-first century. Each chapter contains these five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The mission of Hymns and Hymnody is (1) to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and (2) to provide a theological analysis of what these composers have com...

Organizational Immunity to Corruption. Building Theoretical and Research Foundations (PB)

Why a book about corruption in organization now?The right time for this book has come for several reasons.First, the study of the effects of corruption in the workplace has become one of the 21st century's most exciting and burgeoning fields of research. Corruption and its variants have been studied across a number of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, economics, law, political science and of course management. The current discussion about corruption in organizational studies is one of the most growing, most fertile and perhaps most fascinating ones.Corruption is also a construct that is multilevel and can be understood as being created and supported by social and cultural interaction. As a result, an ongoing dialogue on corruption permeates the levels of analysis and numerous research domains in organizational studies. Thus I see a major opportunity and necessity to look on corruption from a multilevel and multicultural perspective.Second, in the global society of the world today where organizational boundaries are becoming increasingly transparent and during the Global Crisis, which has been rooted in unethical and corrupt behavior of large corporations, a deeper understanding of corruption, its forms, typologies, ways to increase organizational immunity and the best practices how to fight against corruption that are particularly significant and can also uncover it means that individuals, groups, organizations and whole societies can be used to sustain a sens...

Naskrent Julia Marketing Activities

Revision with unchanged content. Recently, it seems as if the general opinion about marketing has deteriorated, in particular due to broadly discussed scandals. At the same time, there has been increased interest in corporate social responsibility and ethical conduct. Hence, this paper evaluates marketing activities with the help of an ethical theory as a normative basis, namely the Theory of Justice by John Rawls. The author, Julia Naskrent, first gives an introduction to the basic concepts of ethics and marketing. After justifying its use for the purpose of this paper, the Theory of Justice is operationalized in order to make it applicable for the actual analysis of marketing activities which is made in accordance with the marketing mix. At the end of the first part of the paper, a model of the most important findings is presented and forms the basis for the second part. Here, ways to legitimize marketing activities are presented by demonstrating several instruments and initiatives companies can establish. Due to combining ethical theory and philosophy with practical marketing activities, this paper is interesting for practitioners such as marketers, as well as philosophers, scholars and economists.

Annette Nölle Anti-Corruption Initiatives for South Korean Water Management

Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 1,3, Martin Luther University, language: English, abstract: Corruption, defined as the "abuse of entrusted power for private gain," has been a recurrent theme throughout South Korean (hereinafter referred to as Korean) history. Since Korea joined the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 1996, it has continuously been ranked among the lowest 20th percentile in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) barometer. The term of corruption primarily refers to the public sector. Therefore, Shleifer and Vishny offer a more narrow definition of corruption as being "the sale by government officials of government property for personal gain." Corruption occurs at the interface between the public sector and the private one, whenever a public official is endowed with the discretionary power over the distribution of goods and services. The consequences of corruption are multifarious, including the lowering of investment and economic growth, a loss of tax revenue, adverse budgetary consequences, for instance by reducing the level of tax collection, and a reduction of the effectiveness of aid flows in developing countries and distortion of the composition of government expenditures. One sector that is known to be very susceptible to corruption is the construction sector, covering major public investment projects. T...

Evelyne Fiechter-Widemann The Human Right to Water. Justice . or Sham.

Water is a matter of life and death. Advanced technology and engineering enable humans to gain better access to it. Nonetheless, the conditions and effort required to reach this goal remain colossal in many countries. Building a lasting infrastructure for adequate treatment before and after use is costly. Therefore, the author believes that a radical change of thinking among people around the world, from the domestic to the large-scale users, becomes a priority. Even if the United Nations entitles all people to justice for water, more responsible and ethical use of it by all interested parties is more important than the spreading of promises, which, in practice, may turn out to be a sham. Only a better understanding that access to water rests on the efforts of everyone, without exception, will reduce overuse, waste, and pollution of the indispensable resource. This volume, while written from a theological, philosophical, and legal perspective (focusing on John Calvin, John Rawls, and Paul Ricoeur), demonstrates that water cannot be merely understood as a human right, but also has to be dealt with from an economic point of view as well as under the authority of the Golden Rule.""The Human Right to Water: Justice or . . . Sham? underlines the ethical background behind many of the contemporary challenges posed by poverty and globalization. The writing is highly pedagogical, therefore enabling the reader to gain access to sophisticated concepts, and, despite the scientific...
